Third Party Advertisers

Third Party Advertisers (TPAs) are persons, corporations or groups that have incurred or plan to incur expenses of at least $1,000 for election or political advertising, or have accepted or plan to accept at least $1000 in election or political advertising contributions.  Third parties meeting this criteria must register with Elections Alberta, follow advertising guidelines established by Elections Alberta, and comply with the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act.  New Legislation came into effect November of 2016 establishing rules for third parties involved in election or political advertising.

An Election Third Party Advertiser only advertises during the 28 day election period commencing with the issuance of a writ of election and is defined in section 44.1(1)(d) of the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act.  Election Third Party Advertisers that engage in Election advertising are required to provide weekly details of all contributions received during the 4 week election period.  As well as a detailed financial statement within 6 months after polling day.  Audited reports are required if election advertising expenses are $100,000 or more in any reporting period.

A Political Third Party Advertiser only advertises outside of the 28 day election period and is defined in section 44.1(1)(g) of the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act.    They are required to file quarterly reports that account for all contributions and annual financial reports that account for revenues raised and expenses incurred.

Authority for the reporting of third party registration and financial statement information is provided by the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act and is available in the Public Files at Elections Alberta.
